While Heine admits that some koans are simply mind games designed to break our brains and force us into new ways of seeing, others are rooted in ancient traditions that are hidden to most modern readers. You will die from my pitchfork even if you do not explain it. What kinds of demons made you become a Buddhist priest? What kind of devil forced you to take up this pilgrimage? You will die from my pitchfork even if you explain it. It can take years to "solve" and the solution, as determined by the master, will vary according to what the individual student needs to learn. "Joshu's Dog" is one of the first koans presented to students of Zen Buddhism. Instead of simply saying, "Yes, every living thing has the Buddha nature," Joshu wants us to meditate night and day on the concept of "nothing" in order to think beyond "yes and no," "Buddha or no Buddha" and connect with something universally true. The koan is a way of "completely uproot all the normal workings of one's mind," wrote Mumon. Indeed your ego-shell suddenly is crushed, you can shake heaven and earth. As a fruit ripening in season, your internality and externality spontaneously become one. Then, all the useless knowledge you have diligently learned until now is thrown away. It is neither nothingness, nor its relative "not" of "is" and "is not." It must be like gulping a hot iron ball that you can neither swallow nor spit out. into this question of what "Mu" is day and night, without ceasing, hold it before you. Would you like to pass through this barrier? Then concentrate your whole body. This is why it is called the Gateless Gate of Zen. The story is a means to an end."įor the pursuit of Zen, you must pass through the barriers (gates) set up by the Zen masters. "The koan is an instrument to get you from un-enlightenment to enlightenment," says Heine, "But it's more about the interaction you have with your teacher than the story itself. That's why koans often seem contradictory, paradoxical and downright random. Zen masters use koans to startle and disarm their students, and shake them from their spiritual slumber. While every wisdom tradition uses stories to teach moral and spiritual truths (Jesus, for example, taught using parables), there's something different about a koan. "Two or more individuals have a brief exchange - which can include words, gestures, even silence - and through that encounter, some kind of ignorance is exposed and understanding is revealed." "A koan is basically an encounter dialogue," says Heine. There are hundreds and hundreds of koans, but each one tells the story of a brief interaction - usually between a student and a teacher, but sometimes two teachers, or a teacher and a rival - that results in a sudden flash of insight. The rat population peaked at 80, providing a look at ramped living conditions. Hence, crowding is very much a psychological and ecological phenomenon, and not just a physical condition.Ĭ. A classic crowding study was done by Calhoun (1962), who put rats into a physical environment designed to accommodate 50 rats and provided enough food, water, and nesting materials for the number of rats in the environment. The suburbanite may feel relatively uncrowded in a small house on a half-acre lot if it is surrounded by trees, bushes, and a hedgerow, even though he lives under much higher physical density than did the frontiersman. The frontiersman may have felt crowded when someone built a homestead a mile away. It may occur at widely different densities. It implies a pressure, a force, and a psychological reaction. Crowding is a product of density, communication, contact, and activity. Density is the number of individuals per unit area or unit space. It is important to emphasize at the outset that crowding and density are not necessarily the same. All of these fiends are producing increased crowding and the perception of crowding.ī. A. Of the great myriad of problems which man and the world face today, there are three significant fiends which stand above all others in importance: the uprecedented population growth throughout the world a net increase of 1,400,000 people per week and all of its associations and consequences the increasing urbanization of these people, so that more and more of them are rushing into cities and urban areas of the world and the tremendous explosion of communication and social contact throughout the world, so that every part of the world is now aware of every other part. So, of course, without warning YouTube has deleted his channel. For me, it was his relaxed attitude and view that “any beer you like is good enough” view of brewing that kept me watching his channel for more than a decade. And – of course – there are those pseudo-purists out there who hated him for showing people that you could make decent beer from canned malt kits, or using extract. He took the DWHAHB philosophy to an extreme, which for some reason rubs some people the wrong way. As you may imagine, someone with such a long and public involvement had a big footprint in our community, as you can see in the huge number of posts referring to him in one single on-line forum.Ĭraig wasn’t without his detractors. His videos motivated a lot of people to try brewing, and helped a lot of new brewers get started. He was one of the most frequent “ Homebrew Wednesday” posters on youtube. Over the past 14 or 15 years, Craig posted innumerable videos on homebrewing, beer and other related topics.Ĭraig was (and still is) an advocate for the simpler forms of home brewing – extract and kits as two examples, but also didn’t shy away from more complex brewing processes. CraigTube was the creation of a fellow Canadian homebrewer, Craig Farraway, from Toronto. While most of the old-time resources are gone, there has been one fixture for well over half my brewing “career” – CraigTube. I’ve also been active in the internet brewing community for that whole time. I’ve been brewing for 23 years, 6 months and 24 days. In the best-case scenario, things continue pretty much as they are today, with everything open and people - slowly but surely - returning to life as normal. Here are their thoughts on the months ahead - the good, the bad and the ugly. We spoke to many of the country’s leading experts. On Saturday, the former prime minister Tony Blair has called on the Government to introduce vaccine passports now or "risk further lockdowns. So how might things pan out in practice over the next six to nine months? When push comes to shove, “the Government remains committed to taking whatever action is necessary to protect the NHS from being overwhelmed”. Ministers believe Plans A and B will be “sufficient to reverse a resurgence in autumn or winter”, but add that “the nature of the virus means it is not possible to give guarantees”. There is no official Plan C but it is, of course, another lockdown, or what the new plan refers to as “more harmful economic and social restrictions” only to be considered “as a last resort”. “In a Plan B scenario, the Government would issue clear guidance and communications to the public and businesses, setting out the steps they should take to manage the increased risks of the virus,” says the document. This would involve mask mandates, vaccine passports and the nation getting what amounts to a stiff talking to. Should that not prove adequate, Plan B would then be instigated “hard and early”. Plan A relies on vaccines and booster shots to hold the virus at bay. On Wednesday, the Prime Minister set out a two-part “Autumn and Winter Plan”. Tasmania recorded five deaths and 1307 new cases, with eight patients in hospital.Perhaps it betrays the UK’s approach to fighting Covid-19, but the only real question we Britons are asking at the moment is this: will there be another lockdown this winter? The Northern Territory reported two deaths and 242 new infections, with 15 people in hospital. The ACT recorded one death and 910 new cases, with 37 people in hospital, including one in intensive care. South Australia recorded 29 deaths and 3797 new cases, with 53 people in hospital, including six in intensive care. Western Australia reported 6916 new infections, with 142 people in hospital, including three in intensive care, which is down from eight last week. Hospitalisations remain at 105, while the number of people in intensive care has increased to three. Queensland reported 14 deaths, down from 18, as well as 4427 new cases following 4447 the week before. There are 231 patients in hospital, up from 172 the week before. Victoria recorded 24 deaths last week and 10,226 new cases, an increase from 8537 the previous week. Intensive care admissions were also down, from 25 to 17. Hospitalisations fell slightly, with 809 patients in hospital compared with 820 the week before. There were 12,450 new cases compared with 10,050 cases the week before. Last week, NSW recorded 24 deaths from Covid-19, an increase from 16 the week before. Professor Kelly said it was unlikely Australians would spend another Christmas in lockdown. While Professor Kelly said there was no increased pressure on hospital systems yet because of Covid, he encouraged people to wear a mask in crowded situations or if they were unwell, test for Covid-19 if they had symptoms and ensure they were up to date with vaccinations.Įvery jurisdiction now reports on Covid-19 cases weekly rather than daily. “For those that are more vulnerable to severe infection, even if you are not over the age of 70, go and get the antivirals.” “If you’re in that age group go and get the antivirals, get them started as quickly as possible. “Antiviral medicine is the thing, if not for everyone but for people over the age of 70. “At the moment we are not considering further doses if you are already up to date, but that’s the thing that ATAGI will continue to look out for over the coming months. “When you consider that most of us got our third doses a year ago or in more recent months, so that protection lasts,” he said. Professor Kelly also reiterated the protection that vaccines provide against severe Covid. Picture: Kobi Wolf/Bloomberg via Getty Images Now is the time to consider if you are due for a vaccine. Select Effects > Noise Reduction / Restoration > Capture Noise Print and agree. Start by locating an area of quiet in your soundtrack you’ll need to zoom in. While you can’t remove everything, you can easily remove drone or constant sounds. One of the biggest audio issues is background noise this can be air con, fans, traffic or all manner of things that you’ll only hear if you’re focusing on sound. I often like to get the audio normalized before starting the editing process to hear exactly what I have. This will remove it completely from the timeline. Select the spike with the Cursor and hit delete. 05 Delete tricky audioĪ more drastic option is to delete the offending audio. If the audio that’s causing the spike is something that you need, say a laugh or clap then use the Cursor to select the audio spike and then use the Amplitude adjustment in the dialogue next to the waveform to reduce the level of the audio. You can tackle this in one of two ways depending on if you need that piece of audio or not. Sometimes you’ll find there are spikes in the waveform that prevent you from Normalizing the Wave this could be a clap, cough or anything that causes the audio to spike. Use Ctrl-A or Cmd A to select the entire timeline and then Effects > Amplitude and Compression > Normalize (Process) and then Normalise to 98% and Normalize all Channels and click Apply. Once open drag and drop the audio you want to clean up directly into Audition and get started. The first thing to do is head to an application such as Adobe Audition you can get a free trial at Thankfully, more often than not, it’s not too tricky to fix without spending too much time on it. We’ve all heard audio that’s too quiet, effected by background noise or just a bit all over the place. If you’re vlogging then check out Jeff’s article on the best vlogging microphones Not sure what type of microphone you need? Then check out our in-depth guide to what microphone you need and how to use them. You can often get away with short stints of out of focus and unstabilised footage, but get the audio wrong, and it stands out a mile. What few photographers realise is that audio is more important than the visuals in many cases. Audio can be seen as a dark art to anyone new to video what microphone should you use, what settings, and how do you clean up audio ready for use? When they get to the room, Rikako has an emotional outburst and runs into Taku’s arms. She is devastated and ends up having to stay in a hotel room with Taku. Taku tags along with her to make sure that she is safe, and when Rikako gets to Tokyo, she finds out that her father is living with his mistress. Keep an eye out for the film's home video release coming sometime in spring, 2017.One good example of this is a powerful scene in the film involving Rikako sneaking away to Tokyo to see her estranged father. Check here to see if the film will be coming to a theater near you. Ocean Waves will continue its limited time theater release until March 10th, 2017. With a realistic and relatable narrative, this is a film that deserves to be seen by as many Studio Ghibli fans as possible. Not only is it an exploration of mature storytelling in animation, but the fact that it stood as a testament of what the rest of the Studio's staff was capable of without Miyazaki or Takahata's guiding hand. Ocean Waves may not be the greatest hidden gem to come out of Studio Ghibli, but it is still a very important film. How those experiences in life shape who we are and what we want to be. But most importantly, the film demonstrates how people have the potential to change as they grow older. Each encounter showing us more of Rikako's insecurities and how Taku reactions to her that flesh him out more as a character. The film's drama ebbs and flows, a bit like the film's namesake. All of the situations seen in this movie are events that could have very easily happened in real life during that turbulent time of youth. Which made me appreciate the film's unique angle and message even more. It didn't really sink it that this had been the movie's intention all along until the very last 10 minutes. I found myself becoming irritated with Rikako's antics, but even more so with trying to understand what Yutaka saw in her or why Taku kept going out of his way to aid her (though even starts to question this as the movie continues). Rikako is more or less the quintessential insecure teen that acts more on her own wishes and disregards the needs of others. The kind of selfish behavior that always ticked me off when I encountered her ilk in my own high school experience. Her dialogue and actions throughout the film did little to endear her to me. A character that had been built up to be the teen girl heartthrob was, in my opinion, the easiest character to hate. Speaking of the female lead, I found myself baffled by her as the film continued. A fact that, I believe at least, is part of the reason that it took so long for the film to get a release outside of Japan. Much like Isao Takahata's film ' Only Yesterday', Ocean Waves is a slower paced, slice of life drama that chooses to focus more on real life situations and dilemma its various characters than an emotionally driven plot. The film itself had been an opportunity for the younger members of Studio Ghibli's staff, at the time, to try their hand at creating an animated film of their own design. Other than being the first direct to television film to come out of Studio Ghibli, the film is notable for being one of the few Studio Ghibli films not directed by studio founders, Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata. It wasn't until December of 2016 that the film received both a remaster and a limited theater release, courtesy of GKIDS, along with a home video release set for the spring of 2017. The movie aired on Japanese television on May 5th, 1993 and had never received a wide release. The film itself was directed by Tomomi Mochizuki and written by Kaori Nakamura. Ocean Waves (also known as 'I Can Hear the Sea') is a Studio Ghibli animated film that was created specifically to be released on Nippon TV. The film is an adaptation of a novel of the same name written by Saeko Himuro. Will these encounters bring the two closer together, or simply push them further away? It isn't until Taku's good friend Yutaka Matsuno introduces him to Rikako Muto, an enigmatic young lady transferring from Tokyo, that his life begins to turn upside down. Going to school, working a part-time job, and hanging out with his friends had become his entire world. For Taku Morisaki, a high school boy living in the Kochi Prefecture, there was little else that occupied his attention other than his day to day life.
